Every Monday, Meshkal compiles a calendar of political, cultural, and economic events taking place in Tunis for the week. No events included appear to require an entry fee. Some events are announced during the week and so may not be included at the time the events calendar is published.

Monday, November 4:

8:00 – Medical students and healthcare workers across Tunisia are on a one-day strike, primarily to protest the disciplinary action taken against a student for making complaints against the administration. The strike has also detailed a list of other demands. The strike has been shared on the Facebook page of the Tunisian Organization of Young Doctors.

9:00 — First day in a two-day “national scientific symposium” on an unspecified topic, entitled “Tunisia on the 2030 Horizon,” hosted by CERES : Centre d’Etudes et de Recherche Economiques et Sociales. Location: 3 rue de l’Assistance, Cité El Khadhra

Tuesday, November 5:

9:00 — Second day in a two-day “national scientific symposium” on an unspecified topic, entitled “Tunisia on the 2030 Horizon” hosted by CERES : Centre d’Etudes et de Recherche Economiques et Sociales. Location: 3 rue de l’Assistance, Cité El Khadhra

9:30 – The Tunisian Union of Agriculture and Fishing (UTAP) together with the German development agency GIZ is hosting a workshop to announce the launch of a new project on water management. Location: UTAP headquarters, Tunis.

14:00 – Lecture on the topic of “Economic Justice and Global Political Trends: Framing the Fight Over Populism in the MENA,” by Dr. Shana Marshall. Location: Le Centre d’Études Maghrébines à Tunis (CEMAT)

18:00 – Opening of the exhibition “Mapping the 1001 nights.” Exhibition of calligraphy depicting the stories by various artists. The calligraphy appears on the walls inside l’Institut Français. The exhibition runs until November 30 and is pen in the evenings between 18:00 and 21:00. Location: L’Institut Français,20-22 Avenue de Paris.

Wednesday, November 6:

9:00 – First day of two-day seminar on the topic of “Epistemic injustice: the idea and its challenges,” hosted by Tunis University’s social science faculty (9 Avril) and the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation. Location: Faculté des sciences humaines et sociales de Tunis.

14:00 – A session on the topic of tax justice, entitled “Make Tax Fair” is being hosted by Al-Bawsala and Oxfam at the University of Manar’s Law Faculty. Location: Faculté des Sciences Juridiques Politiques et Sociales de Tunis, 14, Rue Hédi Karray

19:00 – First day of international conference on “African Monetary Sovereignty,” hosted by the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation. Pre-registration required November 4. For a full program, see here. Conference will be in English and French. Location: Culture City.

10:00 – Interactive workshop on “How to Improve One’s Neighborhood.”  The workshop is being hosted by “Houmtek” [Your Neighborhood], a project of the Goethe Institute and supported by the German Federal Foreign Office. Discussions will focus on cyclable infrastructure, composting, and other ideas on how to revitalize neglected public space. Location: Ariana Municipality, Parc Bir Belhassen

Saturday, November 9:

9:00 – Final day of international conference on “African Monetary Sovereignty,” hosted by the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation. Pre-registration required November 4. For a full program, see here. Conference will be in English and French. Location: Culture City.

9:00 – Parade, in the Medina of Tunis to celebrate Stambali culture and Mouled. Groups from different areas of the country will be gathering, meeting at Sidi Mahrez, and marching towards Sidi Ben Arous, arriving at 13:40.
